Pepitas are a type of pumpkin seed — called Pumpkin, Pepita in fact, they are pumpkin seeds with the hulls removed. The seeds you scoop out of your jack-o-lantern each October are pumpkin seeds, and inside of those are the pepitas.

You can find Pumpkin, Pepita free of their outer shell in a few select types of pumpkins, though these are not the ones you carve at Halloween. Oil seed pumpkins, for example, have only pepitas and not full pumpkin seeds inside.

The name “pepita” is Spanish for “tiny squash seed.” You may also hear pepitas referred to as “naked seeds.” Whatever you call them, you will get a substantial dose of nutrients when you pop a few in your mouth.

Pepitas provide an excellent source of antioxidants. Rich in protein, they also contain a variety of nutrients, including:

  • Copper: Maintains strong bones
  • Zinc: Supports your immune system
  • Magnesium: Boosts heart health

Pepitas have omega 3, which can help boost the cardiovascular system. When you eat pepitas, you will repair muscle more quickly and feel stronger thanks to the healthy dose of minerals.

What is the difference between pumpkin seeds and pepitas?

pumpkin seed and pepitas are sometimes used interchangeably. However, there is a difference between the two. Pumpkin seeds are the white or cream-colored, oval-shaped seeds you find inside of pumpkins such as those you use to make jack-o-lanterns. … Pepitas are seeds without a hull.

What is a Pepita? or Rather what are pepitas?
The term A pumpkin seed, also known in North America as a pepita “little seed of squash”. Is the edible seed of a pumpkin or certain other cultivars of squash. The seeds are typically flat and asymmetrically oval, have a white outer husk, and are light green in color after the husk is removed. Some cultivars are husk less, and are grown only for their edible seed.[1] The seeds are nutrient- and calorie-rich, with especially high content of fat (particularly linoleic acid and oleic acid), protein, dietary fiber, and numerous micro nutrients. Pumpkin seed can refer either to the hulled kernel or unhulled whole seed, and most commonly refers to the roasted end product used as a snack.
An edible seed from a pumpkin or similar squash, which may – after being roasted (and, if needed, shelled) – be eaten as a snack or used as an ingredient in cooking.
